Chobham's Recommended Reads
I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book. - J.K. Rowling
During primary school, it is absolutely crucial that children read widely and at length. This helps to develop their reading stamina and fluency, supports inference and encourages students to fall in love with reading. Fostering a love of reading and an appreciation of truly great stories is absolutely the key to success in English and beyond. In order to do this, children need to have the opportunity to read excellent quality literature and get lost in stories that are relevant to them and the world they live in.
We’ve picked recommended reading lists for each year group containing the titles we think every child should read during the year. These contain some of the children’s classics, which are still firm favourites today, plus new features that have been handpicked to reflect the interests and diversity of our cohort.
These lists can be found below.

The Reader Teacher is a fabulous website. Created by a fellow primary school teacher, it recommends and reviews both current and classic children’s literature. Across the top of the website, you will find a number of tabs to investigate, but we recommend the following:
- The ‘Home’ tab, where you will find 100 recommended reads for year groups from Nursery up to Year 6
- The ‘Book Match’ tab, where you will find suggested reads for fans of particular authors. For example, children love the stories of David Walliams, but it’s helpful for children to know there are other authors who write similarly entertaining books.
- The ‘Year Group and Key Stage Lists’ tab. In particular, the Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 pages on this tab’s drop down menu. The reason why these two options are so helpful is that it sub-divides the recommendations into suggestions for read louds, reluctant readers, picture books, non-fiction books and poetry. Below is an image of the non-fiction and picture book recommendations for LKS2, but there are lots more on the website:
