Supporting Your Child With Knowledge Organisers

At Harris Academy Chobham, we have knowledge organisers to empower students to take control of their learning and build strong study skills.

Knowledge organisers contain critical information for each subject summarised in a concise and organised format. They serve as a revision aid that allows students to regularly revisit key facts, concepts, and vocabulary.

Recent research shows that active retrieval practice strengthens memory and promotes deep learning. Knowledge organisers encourage this type of retrieval practice through activities like: self-testingflashcards and writing practice. Consistent review of knowledge organisers has also been linked to reduced test anxiety by making testing experiences more routine.

Tips on using knowledge organisers

Here are some tips on how you can support your child in using their knowledge organiser:

  • Set aside 15-20 minutes per evening for them to actively study their knowledge organiser. The key is consistent, distributed practice over time.
  • Help them follow the "Fetch, Flip, Check, Repeat" process. Have them fetch a section to memorise, flip the page over, write everything they can recall, check work for accuracy, and repeat until mastered.
  • Ask them to show you their corrections in a different coloured pen so they can monitor their progress.
  • Quiz them on various sections and vocabulary. Flashcards also help reinforce definitions.
  • Praise their effort and perseverance. The more practice retrieving the knowledge, the better they will retain it.
  • Encourage organisation. Knowledge organisers should remain neat, orderly, and easily accessible.
  • Review their techniques and offer tips like mnemonic devices to aid memorisation.
  • Discuss any material they are struggling with. Work together to improve comprehension.
