Year 9 History Workshop

On Tuesday 22nd June, a group of Year 9 History students were joined via live video link by a Palestinian and an Israeli who answered the students' questions on topics surrounding the on-going conflict in Israel-Palestine.  The aim of the workshop was to equip students with the knowledge and the skills to make positive, solutions-focused contributions to the debate which they were really successful at doing.

Some of the excellent questions that the students independently prepared and asked included:

Do you have to change how you act outside of your house compared to at home?

Do you think the conflict can be peacefully ended?

What do you like about the other group's religion?

Have you been to any areas of conflict?

Do you notice the conflict in your day-to-day life?

Have you experienced discrimination due to the conflict?

If you had a chance, what would you ask the other side?

What did you hear about the conflict while growing up?

Is the conflict commonly discussed among friends and colleagues?

There were many more questions, and in fact the students had more that they wanted to ask and the facilitator kindly offered to pass these on to the speakers later.  The students concluded the session by reading about the different interests that Israelis and Palestinians have around the land, both current and historic, and discussed in groups what they thought the best option for resolving the conflict would be, as well as considering the challenges this might present.   It was great to hear some really thoughtful and considered responses from students, who were engaged with the session throughout and were a credit to Chobham.  The facilitator spoke very highly of them at the end of the session.

Thank you so much to Ms Eldrid for organising!
