PE

Intent

At Harris Academy Chobham,PE is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all students in a supportive and challenging environment. We aspire for our students to acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques; to further their knowledge and understanding of PE concepts and principles and develop their overall competence, to enjoy, and excel in, a broad range of sports and physical activities.

Our students participate in competitive sport and through this we teach them how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect; key values at the academy.

We believe that our PE curriculum promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving and teaches students to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.

Implementation

PE at Harris Academy Chobham is taught from Year 1 – Year 4 by a primary specialist PE teacher and in Year 5 and Year 6 taught by secondary PE teachers.

Students have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognised. Students are encouraged to participate in exercise through-out the day during PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning, lunch provision and special events. Our students regularly take part in competitions in the borough as part of the Newham Sport Trust.

At Harris Academy Chobham the PE curriculum is structured to provide a range of sporting experiences, during which every student participates to develop their skills and learning through competitive, team and individual sports. Through our rigorous physical development in EYFS, students leave the foundation stage well prepared for PE in Key Stage 1. At the academy, all students have the opportunity to flourish in the areas of the curriculum in which they excel.

Students with additional needs are catered for with the appropriate support required to allow them to partake with confidence in both their skills and knowledge.

PE at Chobham allows every student to:

·         Practise and refine a range of different skills

·         Improve their teamwork skills

·         Experience success in sport

·         Learn in a safe environment

·         Experience positive competition

·         Enjoy physical activity

·         Experience a diverse range of sports

All students in KS1 and KS2 are able to participate in extra-curricular sports activities throughout the year – through lunch and after school clubs.

In Year 4, all our pupils take part in an intensive two-week course at the London Aquatics Centre.

Impact

Through the teaching of PE at Harris Academy Chobham, our pupils are able to acquire the age-appropriate knowledge and skills which then transfer to support them in their everyday lives. We aspire to have a curriculum that incites a love of PE and sport that will encourage our pupils to engage in sporting opportunities outside of the academy.

Each lesson offers an opportunity for formative assessment, whether that be through mini competitions, performances or matches.

In PE, we measure impact through:

·         Regular learning walks

·         Pupil voice surveys

·         PE Premium spend analysis

·         Analysis of participation at after school clubs and competitions

·         Assessment data

·         Photo and video analysis of students’s practical work

As a part of our federation we annually compete in the Harris Sports Day. This provides our pupils an opportunity to compete on a larger stage and promotes PE across the school.
